Beware the Lolita Midsleeper

» Prudes & Puritans

Angry members of a British parenting forum got Woolworth’s to remove a product called Lolita Midsleeper Combi from their catalog.

As a used bookshop owner I know that most people don’t know of Nabokov, the novel or either of the films. And if I’d seen the item listed I probably never would have a single unclean thought. Funny how it is always the hyper-moral who see wickedness.

A press officer subsequently called Raisingkids to explain: “This was one product sold online and in the Big Red Book [paper catalogue] and quite naturally the people who arranged it had no idea about that word. They’d never heard of the word and in fact, neither had I. I had to go on to Wikipedia to find out the meaning of the word.”

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Beware the Lolita Midsleeper. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
