The window sex workers of Amsterdam are facing tough times even though their trade is legal.
The Rode Draad report describes the atmosphere in many establishments as ‘depressing’ and notes that younger men show little interest in old style brothels and window prostitution.
With the shame pretty much gone it is natural for people to desire a higher quality, more pleasant experience. Not just a furtive quickly in a shabby establishment.
It points to the rise in more upmarket businesses where sex is available for money, like massage salons, and saunas and to the ‘eroticisation’ of social life in general.
And that eroticization means it is easier to find a partner who shares your inclinations without resorting to paying a sex worker.
