Mbabane - Thousands of young women bared their breasts and danced in Swaziland on Monday in the hope of trading a life of poverty for one of royal comfort as one of King Mswati's many wives.

The 36-year-old king picks a new bride each year at the Reed Dance in a royal ritual that is defended by traditionalists as a time-honoured piece of the nation's cultural fabric.

The all-powerful king, who has ruled by decree since his coronation in 1986 at the age of 18, rejected a report by the Daily Mirror in London last week listing him as one of the 10 worst dictators.
