Americans love to pass laws against things. It is an easy way for a legislator to make voters believe that something useful has been done about a problem.
In Illinois sex criminals have been forbidden to use or visit social networking sites.
“Obviously, the Internet has been more and more a mechanism for predators to reach out,” said Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington), a sponsor of the measure and a governor candidate. “The idea was, if the predator is supposed to be a registered sex offender, they should keep their Internet distance as well as their physical distance.
New law makes sex offenders’ use of Internet social networking a felony
Laws - especially bad laws - are often either too vague or crazily comprehensive.
The statute defines a social networking site as “an Internet website containing profile web pages of the members of the website that include the names or nicknames of such members, photographs placed on the profile web pages by such members, or any other personal or personally identifying information about such members and links to other profile web pages on social networking websites of friends or associates of such members that can be accessed by other members or visitors to the website.”

Obviously goal is to keep sex criminals from interacting with potential victims on services like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and - well so many sites involve interaction, profiles, photographs just about every forum on the web regardless of purpose or membership.
And we know that men with uncontrollable illegal sexual addictions will obey the restrictions. Can’t possibly be clever enough to work around them.
